Researchers of the College of Science at Oregon State University have published their discovery of the oldest known orchid specimen to date in the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society. Supplanting the previously held record of oldest orchid aged 20-30 million years old, researchers found a fungus gnat carrying an orchid pollen sac entombed in amber some 45-50 million years ago.
